Żupan
Żupan (Lithuanian:žiponas, Czech:župan, Slovak:župan, Belarusian:жупан, Ukrainian:жупан) is a long-lined garment of Central Asian origin which was widely worn by male nobles in the multi-ethnic Polish-Lithuanian society and Cossacks, the name comes from the Corsican word giuppa which means skirt.
The earliest known mention of ''Żupan'' is dated to 1393, it became a classic form of clothing in the middle of the 16th century, it was fitted at the shoulders with narrow sleeves, since 1570's the garment also had a collar, this basic design did not change except for size and cut of the collar and kind of composing fabric.
Żupans served as an outer garment and was made from sturdy cloth or wool often lined with fur and was worn with a belt called Kontusz sash, nobles usually hung a sword, merchants wore Żupans underneath bekieszas and delias, while Bourgeoisie wore it as inner garment along with outer garments.
Magnates wore żupans with precious stones, sewn from crimson satins, brocades and damasks. Wealthy gentry imitated the magnates with cheaper versions of silk and linen fabrics, townsfolk often wore żupans made from hemp, Jews wore black żupans and peasants wore simple white and grey żupans.
