Sinjar region

The Sinjar region (Kurdish: Herêma Şengalê) is located in the northwestern part of Iraq, within the Nineveh Governorate and near the borders with Syria and Türkiye. The area is characterized by the prominent Sinjar Mountain, a 70 km-long ridge that divides the district and has historically served as a refuge for the local Yazidi population. The region is mainly inhabited by the ethnoreligious Yazidis and it is their main population centre in Iraq. In the second half of the 15th century, Kurmanji-speaking Kurds who adhered to the ancient religion of Yazidism lived in Sinjar.
