Sinjar

Sinjar (Kurdish: شنگال, romanized: Şingal) is a town in the Sinjar District of the Nineveh Governorate in northwestern Iraq. It is located about five kilometers south of the Sinjar Mountains. Its population in 2013 was estimated at 88,023. Its local inhabitants are exclusively Yazidi. The main language spoken by the Yazidis in the town is the Kurmanji dialect of the Kurdish language. In August 2014, it was the site of the Sinjar massacre which was conducted by ISIS towards the local Yazidi population following their capture of the town.[1][2]
