Perfluorinated compound

Tetrafluoroethylene (C₂F₄) is the perfluorinated version of ethylene (C₂H₄).

A perfluorinated compound is a chemical compound that contains a lot of fluorine. They are derivatives of other compounds where fluorine has replaced every hydrogen atom in the structure (sometimes excluding certain functional groups).

Types of perfluorinated compound

Fluorocarbons are perfluorinated hydrocarbons.
- Fluoropolymers are large fluorocarbons. Polytetrafluoroethylene, also known by the brand name Teflon, is a fluoropolymer.
Perfluoro acids are perfluorinated organic acids. Examples include triflic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid.
