Louis Buller Gohmert Jr. (; born August 18, 1953[ 1] ) is an American attorney and former judge. He was a member of the U.S. Representative from Texas 's 1st congressional district from 2005 to 2023. Gohmert is a member of the Republican Party and was part of the Tea Party movement .
In January 2015, he unsuccessfully ran against John Boehner for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives .[ 2]
During the COVID-19 pandemic , he became known for his criticism of wearing surgical masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 . In July 2020, Gohmert tested positive for the disease.[ 3]
In July 2020, Gohmert proposed to ban the Democratic Party over their past support for slavery during the Civil War era.[ 4]
In November 2021, Gohmert announced his plans to run for Texas Attorney General in the 2022 election.[ 5] He lost the Republican nomination in the first round of voting.
