Lisinopril

A lisinopril tablet

Lisinopril is a medication. It is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure and heart attacks.[1] It is one of the main drugs used for high blood pressure. Lisinopril is taken by mouth.

Some people have side effects when taking lisinopril. Some of these are headache, dizziness, cough, and nausea. More serious side effects are low blood pressure, liver problems, and angioedema.[1] If a pregnant person takes lisinopril, it can hurt their baby. Lisinopril works by blocking an enzyme named angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).[1] ACE makes angiotensin I become angiotensin II. Angiotensin II makes blood vessels smaller, which increases blood pressure. With less angiotensin II in the body, blood pressure is lower.[2]

The United States allowed lisinopril to be used as a medication in 1987.[1] It is one of the most used medications in the United States.[3] It is sold with many different names around the world, such as Zestril, Prinivil, and Dapril.[4][5] It is also sold as medication with other drugs, such as amlodipine (as lisinopril/amlodipine) and hydrochlorothiazide (as lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide).
