Hydrochlorothiazide

The chemical structure of hydrochlorothiazide

Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication. It is used as a diuretic. It is used to treat high blood pressure and high fluid in the body.[1] It can also be used to treat diabetes insipidus and renal tubular acidosis.[1] Hydrochlorothiazide is taken by mouth. Sometimes, it is put into a pill with other blood pressure medications. Hydrochlorothiazide is a type of thiazide medication. It stops sodium and chloride ions from coming back into the blood after they enter the kidneys.[1]

Some people have side effects when they take hydrochlorothiazide. Some of these are low electrolytes in the body and worse kidney function. Some less common side effects are gout and high blood sugar.[1]

Companies started selling the drug in 1959.[2] It is sold as a generic drug. It is one of the most used medications in the United States.[3]
