Univerzitet Kolumbija grada Njujorka (engl. Columbia University in the City of New York), koji se često naziva samo Univerzitet Kolumbija, je američki privatni istraživački univerzitet, član Lige bršljana, koji se nalazi u kvartu Morningsajd Hajts na Gornjem Menhetnu u Njujorku. Univerzitet je osnovan 1754. godine kao King's koledž na temelju kraljevske povelje koju je izdao George II od Velike Britanije. Kolumbija je najstarija ustanova visokog obrazovanja u državi Njujork, peta najstarija u SAD i jedna od 9 kolonijalnih koledža koji su osnovani pre Američke revolucije.[4] Univerzitet danas vodi Kolumbija globalne centre u Amanu, Pekingu, Istambulu, Parizu, Mumbaju, Rio de Žaneiru, Santijagu i Najrobiju.[5]

Nakon Američkog rata za nezavisnost, Kraljevski koledž je nakratko postao državna ustanova, a ime mu je promenjeno u Kolumbija koledž 1784. Univerzitet danas radi pod poveljom iz 1787. koja je stavila ustanovu pod upravu privatnog odbora poverenika, a 1896. godine ustanovi je promenjeno ime u Univerzitet Kolumbija.[6] Iste godine univerzitetski kampus je preseljen iz avenije Medison na njegovu sadašnju lokaciju u Morningsajd Hajtsu, gde zauzima šest gradskih blokova, odnosno 13 ha.[7] Univerzitet obuhvata 20 fakulteta i povezan je sa brojnim ustanova, među kojima su Učiteljski koledž (koji je akademsko odeljenje univerziteta), Koledž Barnard i Objedinjeni teološki seminar, sa programima dostupnim kroz Jevrejski teološki seminar Amerike, kao i kod fakultet Džuilijard.[8]

Kolumbija upravlja dodeljivanjem Pulicerove nagrade.[9] Univerzitet ima 101 dobitnika Nobelove nagrade među alumnijima, bivšim studentima i saradnicima, druga iza univerziteta Harvard među svim akademskim ustanovama na svetu. Univerzitet Kolumbija je jedan od četranaest osnivača Udruženja američkih univerziteta i bio je prva obrazovna ustanova u SAD koja je dodeljivala titulu doktora medicine.[6][10] Među značajnim alumniji univerziteta i njegovog prethodnika, Kraljevskog koledža, je pet Očeva osnivača SAD, devet sudija Vrhovnog suda SAD[11], 20 živih milijardera[12], 26 dobitnika Oskara[13] i 29 šefova država, uključujući i tri predsednika SAD.[14]

Istorija

King's koledž (1754–1784)

Prve rasprave o osnivanju koledža u Provinciji New York (1664–1783) započele su još 1704. godine kada je i Lewis Morris poslao pismo Ujedinjenom društvu za promociju jevanjđelja Engleske crkve u kojemu ih uverava kako bi New York bio savršena sredina za osnivanje koledža. Ipak, sve do osnivanja Univerziteta Princeton 1746. godine koji se nalazio na drugoj obali reke Hudson u New Jerseyiju grad New York toj ideji nije pridavao veću pažnju.[15] 1746. godine gradska je skupština donela odluku o prikupljanju sredstava za osnivanje koledža. 1751. skupština je imenovala komisiju građana New Yorka, od kojih su njih 7 bili vernici Engleske crkve, da upravljaju fondom u koji su sakupljana sredstva od državne lutrije namenjena osnivanju koledža.

Prva predavanja organizovana su 1754. godine i predvodio ih je Samuel Johnson. Johnson je bio jedini predavač na prvom kolegiju kojega je pohađalo osam studenata. Predavanja su organizovana u novoj zgradi škole pokraj crkve na današnjem Broadwayu. Institucija je službeno osnovana 31. oktobra 1754. poveljom kralja Geogrea II.
