Tahiti je najveće ostrvo u Francuskoj Polineziji. Nalazi se u arhipelagu Društvenih ostrva u južnom Pacifiku. Po popisu iz 2002, ostrvo ima 169.674 stanovnika. Najveći grad je Papete. Površina ostrva je 1048 km².
Ostrvo se sastoji iz 2 kružna dela koja su spojena prevlakom. Oba dela su vulkanskog porekla, a zovu se „Tahiti nui“ (Veliki Tahiti) i „Tahiti iti“ (Mali Tahiti). Većina stanovništva živi na Velikom Tahitiju. Vegetacija na ostrvu je gusta tropska. Ostrvo je pogodno za poljoprivredu, a okolni okean je bogat ribom.
Prvobitno stanovništvo ostrva su Polinežani.
Najznačajniji evropski istraživač koji je pisao o Tahitiju bio je Luj−Antoan de Bugenvil. Njegovi spisi su u Evropi stvorili sliku o Tahitiju kao rajskom ostrvu na kome ljudi žive srećno i jednostavno, neiskvareni civilizacijom. Takve predstave inspirisale su utopijski koncept o „plemenitom divljaku“ u evropskoj filozofiji, recimo u delima Žan−Žak Rusoa. Ostrvo je posetio i opisao Džems Kuk 1774.
Tifus i velike boginje su krajem 18. veka gotovo uništile lokalnu populaciju.
Godine 1880, Francuzi su preuzeli suverenitet nad Tahitijem, koji je do tada bio pod njihovim protektoratom (od 1840ih).
Na ostrvu se koriste tahićanski i francuski jezik. Postoji Univerzitet Francuske Polinezije (Université de la Polynésie Française).
Značajna je lokalna muzika, uz korišćenje originalnih instrumenata, i različite vrste plesa.
Na Tahitiju je 1890−ih živeo i slikao Pol Gogen.
