Ahmed-paša Hercegović

Ahmed-paša Hercegović, rođen je kao Stjepan (Stefan) Hercegović Kosača u današnjem Herceg Novom 1456. god. bio je plemić iz porodice Kosača i vojskovođa, upravitelj, ministar, glavni admiral, diplomata, državnik, pjesnik i veliki vezir Osmanskog carstva.[1]

U južnoslavenskim, italijanskim i turskim historijskim izvorima njegov životni put nije na jedinstven način prikazan. Njegov otac je Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, a rodio se kao četvrto dijete. Kao njegovu majku dubrovački izvori navode drugu ženu hercega Stjepana, Bavarku i Witelsbahšku kneginje Barbaru. Drugi izvori navode treću ženu Stjepanovu, Ceciliju. Godina rođenja je 1456. ili 1459. god.

Poslije majčine smrti otac Stjepan ga je poslao na odgoj i školovanje u Dubrovnik. Turski izvori navode da ga je otac, nakon tragičnih događaja 1463–64, poslao sultanu kao jamca. Otac mu je umro 1466. godine. Od oca Stjepana i majke naslijedio je poveće bogatstvo, koje je bilo pohranjeno u Dubrovniku. Njegov stariji polubrat i novi herceg, Vlatko, preuzeo je skrbništvo nad njim.

Po dubrovačkim izvorima, tek 1473. god. gubi mu se za punih 10 mjeseci svaki trag. Najvjerojatnije, zbog napetosti oko isplate naslijeđa, te napetosti oko nove ženidbe njegova brata Vlatka, napušta neprimijećeno Hercegovu zemlju, odlazi u Istanbul, traži i nalazi na dvoru sultana Mehmeda II. zaštitu svojih nasljednih prava ali i jedinstvenu priliku za briljantnu karijeru.

Godine 1470 (ili 1473.). Stefen Hercegović je prešao na islam i dobio novo ime Hersekli Ahmed-paša. Brzo je napredovao u službi. Prvi se put javlja 1477. u fermanu Mehmeda II, a već 1478. bio je državni zastavnik (miralem). Za Mehmeda II. postao je 1481. beglerbegom Anatolije, a potkraj te godine oženio se s Hundi-hatun, kćerkom sultana Bajazida II.

Služio je tri osmanska sultana - Mehmeda II, Bajazida II i Selima I Jauza. Učestvovao je u mnogim turskim osvajačkim kampanjama. Pet puta je obavljao dužnost velikog vezira: 1497-1498, 1503-1506, 1511, 1512-1514 i 1515–1516. god.

Umro je 21. jula 1517. god. kraj Alepa u Siriji. Pokopan je u haremu džamije koju je podigao u selu Dil, poslije po njemu nazvanom Hersek (Hercegovina), uz Mramorno more na putu od Yalove prema Izmitu.[2]
