A Case of Need (sh. Slučaj potrebe 'ili Nužda) je roman američkog književnika Michaela Crichtona objavljen 1968. godine pod pseudonimom "Jeffery Hudson". Protagonist je dr. John Berry, bostonski patolog koji započinje istragu sa ciljem da oslobodi kolegu i prijatelja uhapšenog pod optužbom da je izvodeći (tada ilegalni) abortus skrivio smrt kćeri uticajne porodice. Radnja prikazuje komplikacije koje nastanu kada se otkrije da je umrla imala dijete sa crnim dilerom, odnosno nastojanja da se cijeli slučaj zataška uz pomoć korumpirane policije.

A Case of Need je bio četvrti Crichtonov roman, odnosno prvi za koga je koristio pseudonim "Jeffery Hudson". Crichton se za to odlučio uvjeren kako je to njegov prvi "ozbiljni" roman, u kome se, za razliku od eskapističkih pustolovina u svoja prva tri romana napisanih pod pseudonimom "John Lange", bavio tada aktualnim raspravama o legalizaciji abortusa i rasnim predrasudama u američkom društvu. U romanu se također koristio stručnim znanjima stečenim za vrijeme studija medicine, te se u knjizi nalazi i pogovor u kome se opisuju neki manje poznati aspekti medicinske profesije. Roman je 1969. godine osvojio nagradu Edgar[1].

Godine 1972. je poslužio kao predložak igranog filma The Carey Treatment.
