27. dodjela Oscara je održana 30. marta 1955. istovremeno u dvorani RKO Pantages Theatre u Los Angelesu i dvorani NBC International Theatre u New Yorku. Na njoj je losanđeleska Akademija odala priznanje najboljim filmskim ostvarenjima premijerno prikazanim u periodu od 1. januara do 31. decembra 1954. godine. Vodili su je je Bob Hope u Hollywoodu te Thelma Ritter u New Yorku.

Najvećim pobjednikom večeri se smatrala drama On the Waterfront, koja je osvojila Oscar za najbolji film i još osam nagrada, a prije toga se smatrala favoritom i s obzirom na trinaest nominacija - brojku koji su prije toga toga uspjeli postići jedino Gone with the Wind i From Here to Eternity. Vjeruje se kako je tome pridonijelo nastojanje Hollywooda da se "očisti" od kontroverzi vezanih uz vlastitu crnu listu kao i svjedočenja pred kongresnim odborima, za koje je, prema mnogim tumačenjima, On the Waterfront predstavljao alegoriju.

Ceremoniju su, s druge strane, obilježila i velika iznenađenja među dobitnicima, prije svega u glavnim glumačkim kategorijama. Iako je Marlon Brando dobio nagradu za najboljeg glumca u On the Waterfront, i to za nastup koji se danas smatra jednom od njegovih najpoznatijih uloga, pred proglašenje pobjednika se favoritom smatrao Bing Crosby za nastup u filmu The Country Girl. Još veće iznenađenje je bila pobjeda Grace Kelly u natjecanju najbolju glumicu, koju je dobila za ulogu u The Country Girl. Umjesto nje se favoritom smatrala Judy Garland za nastup u filmu A Star Is Born, i to u takvoj mjeri da je TV-mreža NBC poslala TV-ekipu u bolničku sobu gdje Garland ležala nakon poroda kako bi se mogla zahvaliti nakon proglašenja. Kada se ispostavilo da je "Oscar" dobila Kelly, poznati komičar Groucho Marx je Garland poslao telegram u kojoj je dodjelu Oscara proglasio "najvećom krađom nakon Brink'sa". ^[1]
