Žarnovica (slov. Žarnovica, mađ. Zsarnóca, nem. Scharnowitz) je grad u Slovačkoj, koji se nalazi u okviru Banskobistričkog kraja, gde je u sastavu okruga Žarnovica.

Prirodni uslovi

Žarnovica je smeštena u središnjem delu države. Glavni grad države, Bratislava, nalazi se 160 kilometara istočno od grada.

Reljef: Žarnovica se razvila u zapadnoj podgorini planinskog venca Tatri. Naselje se nalazi u dolini reke Hron, ispod planina Vtačnik i Štjavničkih Vrhi. Grad je položena na približno 230 metara nadmorske visine.

Klima: Klima u Žarnovici je umereno kontinentalna.

Vode: Žarnovica se razvila na velikoj slovačkoj reci Hron. Grad je smešten na njenoj desnoj obali, na mestu gde se Klakovski potok uliva u reku.

Istorija

Ljudska naselja na ovom prostoru datiraju još iz praistorije. Naselje pod današnjim imenom prvi put se spominje 1332. godine, kao mesto naseljeno Slovacima. Tokom sledećih vekova grad je bio u sastavu Ugarske.

Krajem 1918. Žarnovica je postala deo novoosnovane Čehoslovačke. U vreme komunizma grad je naglo industrijalizovan, pa je došlo do naglog povećanja stanovništva. Posle osamostaljenja Slovačke grad je postao njeno opštinsko središte, ali je došlo do privrednih teškoća u vreme tranzicije.
