Преломление на границе раздела

Многие материалы имеют хорошо изученный показатель преломления, но эти показатели часто сильно зависят от частоты света. Это явление называется дисперсией света. Стандартные измерения показателя преломления производятся на «желтом дублете» линии D натрия с длиной волны 589 нанометров.

Также существуют более слабые зависимости от температуры, давления / механического напряжения и так далее, а также от точного состава материалов (наличие примесей и так далее); однако для многих материалов и типичных условий эти отклонения находятся на уровне процентов или меньше. Таким образом, особенно важно указать источник для измерения индекса, если требуется точность.

В общем, показатель преломления — это комплексное число, имеющее как действительную, так и мнимую части, где последняя указывает силу потерь на поглощение на определённой длине волны — таким образом, мнимую часть иногда называют коэффициентом экстинкции . Такие потери становятся особенно значительными, например, в металлах на коротких (например, видимых) длинах волн, и должны быть включены в любое описание показателя преломления.
