Шлем[1][2], Шелом[3] — головной убор, плотно облегающий голову и закрывающий уши[4], в другом источнике указано, что шлем - головной убор, защищающий от удара[5].

Средство (элемент формы одежды, оборонительное оружие[2]) индивидуальной защиты головы человека, надеваемое на голову для защиты от травм и ранений и размещения специального оборудования (шлемофон, гермошлем и так далее). Шлем используется в военном деле, при индустриальных и технических работах[5], а также у представителей ряда иных категорий лиц, действующих в опасных условиях, но иногда под французским названием каска[6], например, у шахтёров, строителей, спелеологов, спасателей, спортсменов, парашютистов, мотоциклистов и других.

История

Военный шлем появляется в древности, первоначально делались из кожи[7], и украшался разными символическими фигурами, якобы предохраняющими человека от врага[5]. В античную и феодальную эпохи шлем иногда имел высокие технические качества, нужные для защиты от наступательного оружия[5].

Шлем изготавливался и изготовляется из кожи, дерева, кости, но главным образом из разных металлов[7]. Шлем, по форме — полушарный, конический и другой, обычно плотно облегающий череп.

Индустриально-технический шлем употребляется на металлургических заводах, при работах в шахтах, в авиационном деле, в пожарном деле и другом[5].
