Семнадцатое таммуза (ивр. שבעה עשר בתמוז‎, Shivah Asar b’Tammuz) — пост, установленный в память о несчастьях, которые постигли еврейский народ 17-го числа месяца таммуз.

Традиция сообщает, что 17 таммуза, в конце Потопа, Ной послал на землю голубя из ковчега посмотреть, ушли ли воды. «И голубь не нашел пристанища для своей ноги» (Быт. 8:9). Так же и народ Израиля, который уподобляется в Торе голубю, не может найти себе пристанища в этот суровый день.

17 Таммуза еврейские мудрецы постановили поститься из-за многих несчастий, постигших еврейский народ в этот день. Талмуд (Таанит 26) перечисляет пять основных несчастий:

Если 17 таммуза выпадает на шаббат, то пост переносится на следующий день — 18 таммуза[3].
