Umbral (arquitetura)

Umbral ou ombreira[1] é a denominação dada à laje de pedra ou peça de madeira colocada na parte inferior de uma porta sobre o piso ao nível do chão ou ligeiramente acima deste (soleira).

Nas construções antigas, e ainda hoje, costuma-se colocar uma pedra (de vários tipos, mármore, granito, ardósia, lajota, madeira etc.), com a mesma largura da porta para funcionar no nível do piso como demarcação de separação entre os dois ambientes.[2]

Etimologia

Originada do espanhol, umbral vem do antigo catalão limbrar que, por sua vez, vinha do latim liminaris, -e, relativo à soleira da porta.[2][3]

Em português, umbral passou a significar peça lateral de uma porta ou ombreira e, em sentido figurado, porta, entrada, limiar, ponto de entrada ou início de algo.[2][3]
