Independência é um município brasileiro da região noroeste do estado do Rio Grande do Sul.

Geografia

Localiza-se a uma latitude 27º50'00" sul e a uma longitude 54º11'18" oeste, estando a uma altitude de 372 metros.

Possui uma área de 353,12 km² e sua população estimada em 2004 era de 7 214 habitantes.

Limita-se ao norte com Três de Maio, por divisa seca, ao leste com Alegria, através do Rio Buricá, com Inhacorá também ao leste, com Catuípe ao sul, por divisa seca e ao oeste com Giruá, através do Rio Santa Rosa.

Subdivisões

O município se divide em quatro distritos: Colônia Medeiros, Esquina Araújo, Independência e São Valentim.[5][6]

Etimologia

Ninguém sabe ao certo porque foi dado o nome de Independência a esta localidade, até hoje às raízes etimologicas do nome, são de difícil repercussão. A versão mais corrente é a seguinte: Antes do início da colonização com efetiva ocupação das terras, a região era ocupada por extensa mata e povoado por animais ferozes e grupos indígenas sobre os quais nada se sabe. Independência pertenceu ao município de Rio Pardo, Cachoeira do Sul, Santo Ângelo, Santa Rosa e Três de Maio. Conta-se, mas sem nenhuma base científica ou fundamento histórico, que Independência tem seu nome ligado a bandidos banidos de Santo Ângelo ainda antes de 1890 e que expulsos daquele município tinham que atravessar o Rio Santa Rosa com os seus pertences e instalar-se neste território, muito vasto. Esses "condenados", expulsos e que não sucumbiam face às dificuldades, foram cultivando suas roças para terem alimentos para sobrevivência, embora caça abundante. Um desses bandidos teria voltado a Santo Ângelo com a sua família e surpresas as autoridades de Santo Ângelo, da época, lhe perguntaram"Mas como? Você Voltou? - Sim, voltei porque fiz a minha Independência". É que ele havia se localizado nas proximidades da atual cidade de Independência onde, em regime de economia familiar, objetos artesanais com matéria prima eram oferecidos pela própria natureza.
