Vest-Armenia

Vest-Armenia (vestarmensk: Արեւմտեան Հայաստան, Arevmdian Hajasdan) er de østlige delene av Tyrkia som historisk sett har vært en del av det armenske hjemlandet.[2]

Området ble tatt over av Det osmanske riket i det 16. århundret som følge av krigen med Safavidene mellom 1532 og 1555. Området gikk frem og tilbake mellom rikene, men etter en ny krig i 1639 var det klart at osmanene hadde klar kontroll over området,[3] Området ble da kjent som Tyrkisk Armenia og Osmansk Armenia. I det 19. århundret tok Det russiske imperiet over hele Øst-Armenia i De russisk-persiske kriger,[4] i tillegg til noen deler av Vest-Armenia, blant annet Kars.

Mange armenere som bodde i Vest-Armenia og hadde bodd der så lenge som 2000 år,[5][6] ble enten utryddet eller deportert på grunn av folkemordet på armenerne i 1915. Dette markerte slutten på over 2000 år med armensk kultur i Vest-Armenia, som ble systematisk ødelagt av Tyrkia og regnes som et eksempel på et kulturelt folkemord.[7][8]
