Timothy Harris på Commons

Timothy Sylvester Harris, født 6. desember 1964, er en politiker fra Saint Kitts og Nevis som var øystatens tredje statsminister fra 2015 til 2022. Han var tidligere utenriksminister (fra 2001 til 2008) og finansminister (fra 2008 til 2010).[1] Han var også visestatsminister og landbruksminister fra 2010 til 2013.

Biografi

Harris er født i 1964 i landsbyen Tabernacle på nordkysten av øya Saint Kitts.[2] Han har mastergrad i økonomi fra University of the West Indies i St. Augustine i Trinidad and Tobago og har videre utdannelse fra flere andre universitet.

Han engasjerte seg i politikk fra 1993 og ble innvalgt i parlamentet første gang i 1995 som representant for det sosialdemokratiske partiet St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party. Han ble gjenvalgt i 2000, 2004 og 2010 og han hadde flere ministerposter i tiden fram til 2013.[2]

I 2013 ble Harris sparket fra regjeringen av daværende statsminister Denzil Douglas.[3] Harris dannet da partiet People's Labour Party senere samme år. Før parlamentsvalget 16. februar 2015 dannet hans parti PLP en allianse med to andre partier og denne alliansen fikk flertall ved valget. På tross av at PLP bare fikk et mandat ble Harris valgt til øystatens tredje statsminister og etterfulgte Denzil Douglas som hadde vært statsminister i nesten 20 år.

Ved valget 5. juni 2020 fikk alliansen et klart flertall i parlamentet og Harris fortsatte som statsminister. Den 5. august 2022 ble det holdt nytt valg, og alliansen som støttet Harris tapte flertallet til St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party. Dette partiets leder, Terrance Drew[4] overtok som statsminister etter Harris 6. august 2022.
