Sony Music Entertainment (SME) er et globalt amerikansk musikkselskap eid av Sony, og innlemmet som et generelt partnerskap av Sony Music Holdings Inc. under Sony Entertainment Inc.. Som er et datterselskap av Sony Corporation of America.[4] Selskapet ble opprinnelig grunnlagt i 1929 som American Record Corporation og senere omdøpt til Columbia Recording Corporation i 1938, etter oppkjøpet av Columbia Broadcasting System. I 1966 ble selskapet omorganisert til å bli CBS Records, og Sony Corporation kjøpte selskapet i 1988 og omdøpte det under sitt nåværende navn i 1991.

Sony Music Entertainment er det nest største platemerke av de «tre store» (Big Three), bak Universal Music Group og foran Warner Music Group. Sonys Music Publishing Division er verdens største selskap innen musikk distribusjon, etter oppkjøpet av EMI.[5][6] De eier også SYCO Entertainment, som driver noen av verdens mest vellykkede reality-TV programmer, blant annet Got Talent (norsk versjon Norske Talenter) og X Factor .[7]

Historie

Selskapet som senere skulle bli Sony Music ble etablert i 1929 som American Record Corporation (ARC) ved sammenslåing av flere små plateselskap. ARC ble kjøpt opp av Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) i 1938. Sony Corporation of America kjøpte opp CBS i 1987 for USD 2 milliarder. SCA omdøpte så CBS til Sony Music Entertainment (SME) 1. januar 1991, etter avtalen ved oppkjøpet. CBS Corporation etablerte så ett nytt CBS Records i 2006. I 2004 ble SME en del av Sony BMG, men ble igjen skilt ut som eget selskap i 2008.
