Sofienberg

Sofienberg er et strøk i bydel Grünerløkka i Oslo, beliggende i indre by. Strøket ligger øst for Grünerløkka og nordvest for Tøyen og består for det aller meste av bygårder fra 1890-årene.

Avgrensning

Strøket er trekantformet og avgrenset av Helgesens gate i nord, Toftes gate og Herslebs gate i vest (Schous bryggeri utgjør grensen mot sydvest), og Sars' gate i øst.

Dermed grenser det til Rodeløkka i nord, Grünerløkka i vest, og Tøyen i sør og øst.

Historie og bebyggelse

Sofienberg på kart fra 1887. Rodeløkka og området øst for Trondheimsvegen (vannrett skravur) ble i 1878 innlemmet i Kristiania.

Navnet Sofienberg skriver seg fra 1800-tallet, og tilhørte opprinnelig en løkkeeiendom (nåv. adresse Trondheimsveien 76; husene revet 1910). Området har tidligere vært en del av Dæhlin gård og av Grüners løkke (se Grünerløkka).

Dagens bebyggelse er dominert av leiegårder fra 1890-årene, men med en del nybygg etter sanering fra 1970-årene og fremover. Flere større bedrifter lå i området, som Trio låsfabrikk og Agra margarinfabrikk.

Sofienberg tekniske fagskole ble bygget som allmueskole i 1883.

Sofienberg kirke ble bygget som Paulus kirke og innviet 1877. Omdøpt til Petrus kirke 1892, da nåværende Paulus kirke på Grünerløkka ble innviet, og til Sofienberg 1962.

Området som i dag er Sofienbergparken var kirkegård fra 1858, aktiv til 1918. Mens resten av området ble opparbeidet til park etter at fredningstiden på 40 år var utløpt, er den jødisk gravlunden bevart nord for Sofienberg kirke.
