Skolebibliotek

Det historiske skolebiblioteket ved Gymnasium Laurentianum i Arnsberg i Tyskland var opprinnelig en boksamling eller et bibliotek ved byens kloster.

Skolebibliotek er bibliotek eller boksamlinger på skoler og i læringsinstitusjoner.

Skolebibliotek i Norge

Begrepet brukes i Norge særlig om bibliotek for elever i grunnskolen og i videregående skole slik det er definert i opplæringsloven fra 1998.[trenger referanse] I mellomkrigstiden var ambisjonen at alle skoler skulle ha egen boksamling tilgjengelig for elevene. Skoledirektørrådet arguemnterte for at det måtte være obligatorisk. Bibliotekloven av 1935 bestemte at det skulle være bibliotek ved alle grunnskoler med mer enn 12 elever. Stortinget bevilget 1891 egne midler til oppbygging av skolebiblioteker.[1]

Skolebibliotekene i Norge eies og drives av de enkelte skolene. De skal tjene skolens formål og derfor ha en pedagogisk innretning, det vil si dekke de behovene elevene og lærerne har for litteratur og informasjon til lesetrening, lystlesing og informasjonssøk. Informasjonskompetanse er et viktig stikkord i en skolebibliotekars hverdag.

Skolebibliotekene inneholder i tillegg til bøker og blader også lyd- og bildemedier som CD-plater og DVD-plater. Mange skolebibliotek har også egne datamaskiner med Internett, til bruk for elevene. Bibliotek utstyrt med slikt multimediautstyr ble på 70- og 80-tallet kalt mediatek. På nybygde skoler er bibliotekene ofte plassert i egne lokaler sentralt i skolebygget. Tankegangen bak er at biblioteket skal være «skolens hjerte».

Bemanningen av og planene for skolebibliotekene varierer stort mellom forskjellige skoler i Norge. Gjennomsnittlig betjent tid på biblioteket er bare knapt tre arbeidstimer per uke. Skolebibliotekarene er vanligvis lærere, eventuelt med tilleggsutdanning. Ca. 10 % av de bibliotekansvarlige i grunnskolen og 50 % i videregående skole er bibliotekarutdannet. Flere av disse er tilknyttet Skolebibliotekarforeningen i Norge som igjen er tilsluttet Nordisk Skolebibliotekarforening. Mange skolebibliotek samarbeider med folkebibliotekene i kommunen.
