Rhaphium er en artsrik slekt) av fluene (Brachycera), som sammen med mygg (Nematocera), utgjør tovingene (Diptera). Styltefluer har lange bein, herav kommer navnet.

Utseende

Artene i denne slekten er stort sett middelsstore, mørke styltefluer med noe grønnlig metallglans. Beina er vanligvis mørke. Det tredje antenneleddet er gjerne forlenget slik at antennene er mye lengre enn hodet.

Levevis

Styltefluer finnes langs innsjøer, elver, fuktige områder i skog og på gressenger. De holder seg på det samme området, blir de skremt opp flyr de ikke langt. Ofte sitter de litt høyt i vegetasjonen, tar en liten runde, gjerne over vannflaten, for å lande på omtrent det samme sted de startet fra.

De alle fleste styltefluer er rovdyr i larvestadiet og som voksne. De voksne spiser mindre dyr som de fanger.

'Eggene legges i fuktig jord, tang, under bark eller i mudder. Noen arter legger egg i vann.

Larvene til mange av artene suger ut kroppsvæske av andre dyr. Enkelte små arter har egglegging eller larvestadiet råttent organisk materiale (saprophage).

Alle tovinger gjennomgår en fullstendig forvandling, med et puppestadium.

Utbredelse

Slekten forekommer i alle verdensdeler bortsett fra Antarktis og Australia.

Systematisk inndeling

Styltefluer tilhører overfamilien Empidoidea. De andre familiene i denne gruppen er Dansefluer (Empididae), dvergdansefluer Atelestidae , Microphoridae og buskdansefluer Hybotidae.
