Pyrrhosseier

Pyrrhosseier er en seier hvor resultatet ikke nødvendigvis er verdt kostnaden. Om noen vinner en pyrrhosseier, har de negative virkningene vært større enn den eventuelle gevinsten; man har vunnet en hul seier, eller en seier som er jevngodt med nederlag.[1]

Uttrykket stammer fra historien om Pyrrhos av Epirus som i to seire over romerne, første gang i 280 f.Kr. og deretter i 279 f.Kr. under pyrrhoskrigen vant seire som nesten førte til selvutslettelse. Den greske hærføreren hadde færre tap, men romerne hadde større tilgang på menn og deres tap gjorde mindre skade på deres krigsanstrengelser enn seirene til Pyrrhos. Han er ofte sitert som «Enda slik seier og jeg kommer alene tilbake til Epirus»,[2] eller «En slik seier til, og jeg er fortapt».[3]

En beslektet uttrykk er «å vinne slaget, men tape krigen». Dette uttrykket beskriver en strategi som har dårlig definerte mål, og gir noe framgang i begynnelsen før man får tilbakegang eller taper. Det står i kontrast til en pyrrhosseier hvor målet kan være klart definert, men kostnadene for å oppnå målet er for store.
