Osborne Russell (født 1814 i Bowdoinham i Maine[2] i USA, død 2. august 1892) var en mountain man og politiker som bidro til å opprette regjeringen i den amerikanske delstat Oregon.

Liv og virke

Osborne Russell kom til Oregon Country i 1834 som medlem av Nathaniel J. Wyeths andre ekspedisjon. Han vendte tilbake til samme område i 1842 med Elijah Whites følge. Han deltok i Champoegmøtet 2. mai 1843, og stemte da for at det skulle dannes en regjering.[2] I oktober samme år ble han utvalgt av den første eksekutivkomité til å bli øverste dommer for Oregons provisoriske regjering og tjenestegjorde som dette til 14. mai 1844.[3] I 1844 ble han innvalgt i Oregon-territoriets provisoriske regjerings annen eksekutivkomite. Han var alliert med den gruppe som ønsket å utrope en uavhengig Republic of the Pacific, og var derfor ikke fremgangsrik som kandidat til guvernør i 1845; han tapte mot George Abernethy. Russell dro etterhvert til California.[2]

Selv om den ikke ble publisert før lenge etter opprettelsen av Yellowstone National Park, inneholder Osbornes Journal of a Trapper en tidlig beskrivelse av Lamar Valley, eller Osbornes Secluded Valley i Yellowstone.[4][5]
