Medetera er en artsrik slekt av styltefluer (Dolichpodidae). Artene er rovdyr som jakter blant annet på barkbiller, de er derfor regnet som nyttedyr i skogbruket.

Utseende

Artene i denne slekten er forholdsvis små og spinkle styltefluer med tynne bein. De har vanligvis ikke noen utpreget metallisk farge.


Levevis

Disse artene lever gjerne i skog der de voksne insektene løper rundt på trestammer på jakt etter bytte. De løper raskt, men flyr ikke så ofte. De fanger små insekter, og kan være effektive predatorer på barkbiller, derfor er de regnet som nyttedyr i skogbruket.

Utbredelse

Slekten har en kosmopolittisk utbredelse.

Systematisk inndeling / antall norske arter

Styltefluer tilhører overfamilien Empidoidea. De andre familiene i denne gruppen er Dansefluer (Empididae), dvergdansefluer Atelestidae , Microphoridae og buskdansefluer Hybotidae.
