Martyrologium Romanum

Martyrologium Romanum (=Det romerske martyrologium) er den katolske kirkes offisielle martyrologium. Den er obligatorisk hva angår den romerske ritus, men bispedømmer, bispedømmene i landsammenslutninger, og ordensinstitutter kan utarbeide rettelig approberte tillegg.[1] Den gir en omfattende men ikke uttømmende liste over alle helgener anerkjent av Kirken.[2]

Historie

I 1582 forordnet pave Gregor XIII en revisjon av den julianske kalender og skape et system som nå er kjent som den gregorianske kalender, altså som er kjent ved hans navn. Det romerske martyrologium ble publisert første gang i 1583. En ny utgave kom allerede senere i det samme år. Den tredje versjonen, som er fra 1584, ble gjort obligatorisk for overalt der den romerske (latinske) ritus var i bruk.[3]

Dens hovedkilde var Usuards martyrologium, komplettert av pave Gregor I. Dialoger og arbeider av noen av kirkefedrene; for de greske helgeners vedkommende var det lagt til grunn den katalog som er lkent som Sirlets Menologion.[3] Opprinnelsen kan spores tilbake til Martyrologium Hieronymianum, som igjen var basert på kalendere av romersk, afrikansk og syrisk proveniens, men med gradvis tilføyde navn på helgener fra andre områder, noe som førte til en del duplikasjoner, fusjoner av flere helgener sammen til én, og andre feil.[4]

Ganske snart, i 1586 og atter i 1589, ble det publisert reviderte versjoner med rettelser av den italienske kirkehistorikeren Caesar Baronius (senere kardinal) sammen med indikasjoner av de kilder han støttet seg til, og i 1630 utsendte pave Urban VIII en ny utgave.[3] Året 1748 kom en ny revidert utgave under pave Benedikt XIV, som hadde arbeidet personlig med korreksjonearbeidet: hanfjernet noen navn, som blant andre Klemens av Alexandria og Sulpicius Severus, med beholdt andre som det var blitt reist innvendinger mot, som pave Siricius. Senere rettelser frem til året 2001 var av mindre art, der det tildels var noen rettelser men ellers for det meste tilkom navnene på helgener som var blitt kanonisert senere.

Det andre vatikankonsil dekreterte at «Fremstillingene om martyrier og om helgenenes liv må være i samsvar med de historiske fakta».[5] Dette førte til nye og mangeårige studier, som munnet ut i en ny og gjennomgripende revidert utgave av Martyrologium Romanum i 2001, fulgt i 2004 av en revisjon som korrigerte noen typografiske feil i 2001-utgaven og tilføyde 117 personer som var blitt kanoniserte eller beatifiserte mellom 2001 og 2004, og i tillegg et betydelig antall fra meget gamle helgener som ikke var blitt medtatt i den forutgående utgaven. «Det oppdaterte martyrologium omfatter 7000 hellige og salige som nå venereres av Kirken, oghvis kult er blitt offisielt anerkjent og anbefalt til de troende som forbilde verdige etterfølgelse».[6][7]
