Den katolske kirke i England og Wales er en del av den verdensomspennende katolske kirke i fellesskap med paven.

Det er viktig å merke seg at Den katolske kirke anerkjenner at Skottland og England og Wales er helt uavhengige enheter i forhold til hverandre. Den katolske kirke i Skottland blir ledet av sitt eget hierarki og egen bispekonferanse og er ikke underlagt engelske biskoper. Det hender imidlertid at lederne av bispekonferansene for England og Wales, Skottland og Irland møtes for å diskutere saker av felles interesse, men de er selvstendige nasjonale enheter.

Historie

Kristningen av England

Den katolske tro ble etablert i det som idag er England og Wales allerede i det første århundre etter Kristus og i 597 ble området besøkt av den første pavelige utsending, som etablerte en direkte forbindelse fra Kongedømmet Kent og til Roma og til det benediktinske klosterliv som ble iverksatt av Augustin av Canterbury.

England var en del av den katolske kirke for nesten tusen år fra Augustin av Canterburys tid, men i 1534, under styret til Henrik VIII ble en stor del av kirken gjennom en rekke vedtak og lovendringer mellom 1533 og 1536[1] knyttet til Henrik VIII personlig og hans nyskapning Den engelske kirke med Henrik som selverklært leder.

Under styret til Henriks sønn Edvard VI, ble Den engelske kirke mer innflytelsesrik overfor de europeiske protestantiske kirkene, men kom for en kort periode igjen under pavelig autoritet under styret til dronning Maria I i 1555. Da dronning Elisabeth I kom på tronen i 1558, ble Den engelske kirken igjen uavhengig fra Roma i en beslutning fra dronningen i 1559.

Den katolske kirke fortsatte imidlertid sitt virke i England selv om virksomheten i perioder ble regnet som ulovlig og ble straffet. Blant annet ble jesuitter og prestestudenter regnet som forrædere. Prester som ble tatt i å lese messe ble henrettet under tortur. De fleste recusant medlemmer, særlig i det katolske nord og i aristokratiske familier, praktiserte sin tro i hemmelighet helt fram til 1832 da Loven om katolsk emansipasjon ble satt i kraft. Bispedømmer, til erstatning for de tidligere distrikter ble opprettet av pave Pius IX i 1850.

I folketellingen i 2001 oppga rundt 4,2 millioner i England og Wales at de anser seg selv som katolikker, dette utgjør rundt 8% av den totale befolkningen. Hundre år tidligere, i 1901, var antallet bare 4,8% av befolkningen. Andelen katolikker var høyest i tellingen i 1981, med 8,7%.[2] I en undersøkelse av Ipsos Mori i 2009 tilsier 9,6%, eller 5,2 millioner katolikker England og Wales.[3]

Særlig er konsentrasjonen av katolikker stor i Nordvest-England hvor en av fem er katolikker.[4] Dette inkluderer Liverpool som har den høyeste andelen katolikker enn noen annen by i Storbritannia med sine 46% katolikker. Historisk skyldes dette både den store andelen irske innvandrere som følge av Act of Union 1800 som gjorde Irland til en del av Storbritannia,[5] som en høy konsentrasjon av engelske recusanter som bodde i Lancashire.
