Bressay (norrønt: Breiðey/Brusey; skotsk: Bressa)[1] er en av øyene som utgjør Shetlandsøyene i Skottland med 368 innbyggere ved folketelling i 2011.[2]

Det viktigste tettstedet Maryfield har fergeforbindelse med Lerwick på Mainland, som er Shetlands hovedøy, og til øya Noss. I Maryfield finnes et kulturarvssenter og Gardie House som ble oppført i 1724. Bressay er skilt fra Mainland av Bressay Sound. Andre severdigheter på øya er Bressays fyrtårn, klippeformasjonene ved havet og befestninger fra første verdenskrig.

Geografi og geologi

Bressay ligger rett sør for Whalsay, vest for Noss, og nord for Mousa. Med et område på 28 km2 er det den femte største øya på Shetland. Befolkningen konsentrert midt på vestkysten, rundt Glebe og Fullaburn.

Øya består av gammel rød sandstein med noen basaltiske inntrengninger. Bressay ble utvunnet mye for byggematerialer, brukt over hele Shetland, spesielt i nærliggende Lerwick.[3] Det er en rekke havgrotter og hvelving . Den største av elleve innsjøer på øya er innsjøen Grimsetter i øst, og innsjøen Brough.

Dyreliv

Bressay har et stort antall trekkfugler, spesielt i øst. Innsjøen Grimsetter er et fristed for vadefugler og sangsvaner. Helt i sør er det en koloni av tyvjoer.[3]
