Brahmagupta på Commons

Brahmagupta (født 598, død rundt 665) var en indisk matematiker og astronom. Han ble født i byen Bhinmal i staten Rajasthan i dagens nordvestlige India.

Som matematiker er han mest kjent for å ha oppdaget tallet null. Hans verk Brahma Sphuta Siddhanta fra omkring 628 er det tidligst kjente verket som behandler nullen som et tall i egen forstand, og i dette verket angir han også regneregler for aritmetikk med negative tall og null. Han forsøkte også å definere divisjon med null. Innen geometri er hans mest kjente bidrag Brahmaguptas formel som gir arealet til en syklisk firkant.
