Aritmetikk

Aritmetikk (fra gresk αριθμός, arithmos = tall/siffer) betegner vanligvis den gren av (eller forløperen for) matematikken som omhandler elementære operasjoner på tall. Blant matematikere benyttes ofte ordet som et synonym for tallteori.

De fire vanlige aritmetiske operasjonene er:

Noen ganger inkluderes også potenser (opphøyd), prosent, kvadratrot og logaritmer.

Aritmetikken til naturlige tall, heltall, rasjonale tall (i form av brøker) og reelle tall læres i grunnskolen. Herunder manuelle oppskrifter (algoritmer) for operasjonene med penn og papir. Siden 1970-tallet har bruken av digitale verktøy (kalkulatorer, PCer, apper på mobiltelefoner) overtatt for penn og papir. Mange vil mene at manuelle oppskrifter likevel har sin plass i skolen fordi det bidrar til økt tallforståelse og gjør de fleste elevene bedre rustet i hverdag og på jobb til å foreta cirka-beregniger raskt i hodet.

Innenfor aritmetikk opererer man med de fire regneartene, som omfatter addisjon, subtraksjon, multiplikasjon og divisjon. Operandene i de tre første regneartene har to sett med navn som ikke bør blandes sammen og brukes samtidig. Med dette menes blant annet at det ikke er tradisjon for å kalle operandene i og resultatet av et addisjonsstykke for addend + ledd = sum.

  • subtraksjon
    • minuend − subtrahend = differanse
    • ledd − ledd = differanse
  • multiplikasjon
    • multiplikand × multiplikator = produkt
    • faktor × faktor = produkt
  • divisjon
    • dividend / divisor = kvotient
    • teller / nevner = kvotient

Hver av disse regneartene utfører en matematisk operasjon på to tall for å danne et tredje.

I digitale verktøy brukes ofte tegnene - istedenfor − og * istedenfor × og på kalkulatorer vises ofte ÷ istedenfor /.
