Atlantic City (Jan Mayen)

Atlantic City var en radiolyttestasjon på ved Nordlaguna på Jan Mayen, etablert av amerikanerne i 1943. Formålet var å peile inn og dermed kunne eliminere tyske radio- og værstasjoner som befant seg på Grønland.[1]

Det viste seg at tyskerne hadde etablert fire slike stasjoner, og samtlige ble etter hvert oppdaget og tatt hånd om. «Atlantic City» oppdaget stasjoner på både Grønland og Svalbard, men ikke den som tyskerne hadde anlagt i nordenden av Jan Mayen, på den andre siden av vulkanen Beerenberg. Den hadde blitt satt opp 25. september 1944 og ble oppdaget av en peilestasjon på Island i januar 1945. Den ble hentet av norske mannskaper fra patruljefartøyet «Namsos» 27. mars 1945. Vindmåleren var da defekt.[1]

Stasjonen var bemannet med ti–elleve mann.[1]

Jan Mayen var sammen med Svalbard ikke okkupert av tyskerne under krigen, og norske myndigheter tillot etableringen av lyttestasjonen, under forutsetning av at den ble forlatt straks krigen var over. Følgelig ble Atlantic City tatt ut av bruk i 1946, og brakkebyen ble overlatt til vær og vind.[1]
