A Christmas Carol er en TV-film fra 1971. Den er regissert av Richard Williams, og han fikk sin første Oscar for den.[4][5][6][7]

Filmen varer i 26 minutter og var en julespesial som ble vist første gang på den amerikanske tv-kanalen ABC den 21. desember 1971.[5] Den er basert på En julefortelling av Charles Dickens.[8]

Handling

Natten til første juledag blir den rike, men gjerrige Ebenezer Scrooge hjemsøkt av tre spøkelser, som én etter én kommer til syne og forteller ham at de er henholdsvis gjenferdet av fortidens juledager, gjenferdet av nåtidens juledag og gjenferdet av fremtidens juledager. Spøkelsene viser ham hvordan hans ubarmhjertighet rammer menneskene rundt ham, og gjennom dette lærer han seg verdien av nestekjærlighet.[8]

Produksjon

Richard Williams' versjon av historien om Ebenezer Scrooge er tegnet med utgangspunkt i tresnittene som illustrerte historien til Dickens på 1840-tallet[6], og var også inspirert av tegninger laget på 1930-tallet av John Leech og Milo Winter.[5] Det har blitt bemerket at dette har gitt animasjonsfilmen en særegen stil som kler fortellingen fra 1800-tallet svært godt.[4][5]

Det er nesten utelukkende animatører tilknyttet Disney-selskapet som har utført animasjonene til denne versjonen.[trenger referanse] Etter at filmen hadde hatt premiere begynte en stor debatt om realisme i animasjon. Veldig mange trodde at denne filmen var rotoskopert, altså at animatørene hadde tegnet av stillbildene fra en film der levende skuespillere spilte rollene, men i virkeligheten var dette en tradisjonell animasjonsfilm som ikke tok utgangspunkt i levende bilder.[trenger referanse]
