Smalnebbdukkpetrell (Pelecanoides urinatrix), er ein dukkpetrell og medlem av ordenen stormfuglar. Han er ein av fire svært like alkeliknande små sjøfuglar som lever på den sørlege halvkula. Dei har hekkeutbreiing på øyar utanfor Sør-Afrika og i det sørlege Indiahavet, i Sør-Atlanteren, på øyar og holmar utanfor New Zealand og søraustlege australske øyar.

Skildring

Smalnebbdukkpetrell er ein liten, tjukkfallen petrell, typisk 20 centimeter i lengd med typisk vekt på rundt 130 gram.[1] Fjørdrakta har svart overside, skittenkvit underside og han har eit svart nebb.[2] Vengene har tynne kvite striper. Andletet og halsen kan vere meir brunt enn svart. Beina er blå.[2] Dersom ikkje denne fuglen er observert svært nært, er han nesten umogleg å skilje frå kortnebbdukkpetrell, men kortnebbdukkpetrellar har langt lysare fjører på undersidene av vengene enn smalnebbdukkpetrell. Det er berre små skilnader storleik, kortnebbdukkpetrellar er ca. 2 cm kortare i kroppslengd.[1] Nebbet er litt mindre og smalare enn på kortnebbdukkpetrellar.[3]

Smalnebbdukkpetrell har utbreiing til havs mellom breiddegradane 35 og 55 grader sør, for det meste omkring øyar.[2] Dei beitar på kontinentalsokkelen i hekkesesongen, rørslene deira i utanom hekkesesongen dårleg kjente, og i kva grad det spreier meir allment er ikkje kjent. Som andre medlemmer av familien fangar dei byttedyra ved vengdriven dukking, og er i stand til å dukke ned til 60 meter. Dietten av denne arten er dominert av krepsdyr.[3] Beiting skjer i havet nær kysten, men nokre gonger på djupare pelagisk sone utanfor hekkesesongen.

Para dannar monogame band. Hekkekoloniane er store, og det er omtrent eitt reir per kvadratmeter. Vanlegvis finn dei reirplassar vegetasjonsdekte bakkar, tidvis òg på flat mark.[2] Reirhòlet er ein ca. 50 cm lang kanal i bakken med eit kammer nedst som kan vere fora med tørka gras. Hoa legg eit enkelt egg, og dei rugar egget i 53-55 dagar. Ungen er flygeferdig først etter 45-59 dagar. Begge foreldra tar omsut for ungen, som er meir grå i fjørdrakta enn vaksne. Den forventa levealderen er 6,5 år.[2]

Populasjonen er estimert til om lag 16 millionar individ (2004) og er minkande.
