Jeger

Ein jeger er eit menneske eller eit dyr som jaktar på byttedyr, hovudsakleg for å skaffe seg mat eller andre ressursar som byttedyret måtte ha, for eksempel pelsverk.

Jegerar var opphavleg både jegerar og sankarar. Denne gamle veidekulturen kom til Skandinavia med villreinen, då isen trekte seg tilbake etter siste istid. Først mykje seinare blei jegerane meir bufaste. I Norden har ein rekna samane mellom dei første jegerane som busatte seg her. Norsk institutt for kulturhistorie har dokumentert 8-9000 år gamle spor etter villreinfangst her i landet. Samisk veidekultur varte også heilt opp mot 1600-talet.

Etternamn som engelsk Hunter og tysk Jäger, på norsk og dansk Jæger, kjem frå yrkesnemninga.
