Ketika Perang Dunia II, skuadron ini telah terbang pengebom Lockheed Hudson dalam kempen-kempen Tanah Melayu dan Hindia Timur Belanda, mengalami kerugian yang teruk sebelum dikurangkan kepada kader pada tahun 1942. Ia telah ditubuhkan semula dengan Bristol Beaufort pada tahun berikutnya, dan lengkap semula dengan de Havilland Mosquito pada tahun 1945 bagi operasi selanjutnya di Hindia Timur Belanda. Dikurangkan kepada kader sekali lagi selepas perang berakhir, Skuadron No. 1 Squadron telah ditubuhkan semula di Amberley pada tahun 1948 sebagai sebuah unit pengebom berat Avro Lincoln. Dari tahun 1950 hingga 1958 ia telah berpangkalan di Singapura, misi penerbangan ketika Darurat Tanah Melayu, di mana ia menanggung beban kempen udara Komanwel terhadap gerila komunis. Apabila ia kembali ke Australia ia dilengkapi semula dengan jet pengebom Canberra Elektrik Inggeris. Ia mengendalikan McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom dari tahun 1970 hingga 1973, sebagai penyampaian henti jurang yang belum selesai ayunan sayap pengebom General Dynamics F-111C. F-111 kekal dalam perkhidmatan selama 37 tahun sehingga diganti oleh Super Hornet pada tahun 2010. Pada bulan September 2014, sebuah detasmen Super Hornets dikerahkan ke Timur Tengah sebagai sebahagian daripada sumbangan Australia kepada campur tangan tentera terhadap ISIL.
