Kehidupan awal dan pendidikan

Robert Anderson Van Wyck merupakan anak kepada pasangan William Van Wyck dan Lydia Ann Maverick. Beliau merupakan anak sulung dari 7 orang adik beradik. Adik beradiknya yang terkenal termasuk adik ketiganya, Augustus Van Wyck [1] dan adik perempuannya Lydia Maverick Van Wyck. Beliau berkahwin dengan Margretia Brinckerhoff Van Wyck.[2] Beliau menyambung pelajarannya di Wilson Academy di North Carolina, Amerika Syarikat kemudian meneruskan pengajian sarjana di Universiti Columbia, Amerika Syarikat. Adik iparnya, Robert Hoke seorang ahli perniagaan dari North Carolina antara tokoh terkenal semasa perang saudara Amerika. Selain itu, sepupu beliau Charles Van Wyck dari keturunan Theodorus Van Wyck (1668-1753).[3][4]

Kerjaya

Kerjaya asal beliau ialah sebagai seorang ahli perniagaan. Kemudian beliau menuntut ilmu guaman sebelum dilantik sepenuhnya sebagai peguam bertauliah. Beliau mempunyai pengalaman yang luas dalam bidang perniagaan dan perundangan sebelum dia menyertai dunia politik. Perniagaan beliau maju bergantung dengan rangkaian sosial yang di bentuk sebaik mungkin. Beliau menjawat berbagai jawatan atasan persatuan dan kesatuan. Selain itu, beliau merupakan ahli tetap freemason di Lodge Ancient, New York, Amerika Syarikat.

Kerjaya politik

Beliau menempah nama di dunia politik dan menyertai Parti Demokrat Amerika Syarikat. Beliau aktif dalam banyak peringkat konvensyen, negeri dan nasional. Kemudian beliau dilantik sebagai Hakim di Mahkamah New York serta dilantik sebagai Ketua Hakim di mahkamah tersebut.

Van Wyck meletakkan jawatan sebagai hakim dan menerima pencalonan Parti Demokrat untuk merebut kerusi Datuk Bandar New York. Beliau dipilih melalui pilihan raya Datuk Bandar pada tahun 1897 dengan majoriti yang besar. Beliau menjawat jawatan tersebut dari 1898 hingga 1901.

Meninggal dunia

Beliau dan isterinya pergi melancong di kota Paris, Perancis. Di sana beliau telah jatuh sakit, akhirnya beliau disahkan meninggal dunia pada 14 November 1918 pada usia 69 tahun. Beliau disemadikan di Gereja Suci Trinity Amerika. Jasadnya kemudian di kembalikan ke kota New York dan dikebumikan di tanah perkuburan kristian Woodlawn, Bronx, Amerika Syarikat. [5][6]
