Pragaras – kančios ir skausmo vieta, į kurią po mirties turinčios patekti nusidėjėlių sielos. Figūruoja daugelyje tikėjimų.[1][2][3][4]

Literatūroje ir mene pragaras neretai vaizduojamas su dervos katilais ir kitokiais kankinimo atributais.

Apreiškimo Jonui knygoje paminėtas ežeras degantis ugnimi ir siera, tačiau jo nederėtų painioti su vieta, į kurią, krikščionių manymu, po mirties patenka nusidėjėliai. Teologiniu požiūriu, pragaras ir Abraomo prieglobstis yra laikinos vietos, kur numirusieji laukia paskutinio teismo. Po jo, teisieji gyvens Naujojoje Žemėje, nusidėjėliai – ugnies ežere. Pragare, pasak legendų, gyvena raudoni, raguoti velniai. Vietoje jų pėdų – ožkos kanopos, rankose jie nešasi šakes. Jų vadovas, vadas – ypač didelis velnias, Liuciferis.

Islame pragaras (džahanamas) suprantamas kaip fizinės bausmės vieta, kur pasmerktųjų laukia nepakeliamos kūniškos kančios.[1] Džahanamas įsivaizduojamas kaip degančios dervos duobė.[1]

Nepainiotinas su mirusiųjų buveine, vadinama pragarais.[5]

Žodžio kilmė

Žodis „pragaras“ kilęs nuo žodžio pra-gerti („sugerti, įsiurbti“; plg. „praraja“ kilusi nuo žodžio praryti).[6][7] Taip pat vartotas slaviškos kilmės žodis pekla (< bltr. пекла, lenk. piekło < slavų prokalbės *pьkъlъ 'derva').[8]
