Martynas Šernius (1849 m. lapkričio 10 d. Voveriškiuose, Klaipėdos apskritis – 1908 m. balandžio 14 d. Cintjoniškiuose dab. Šilutės dalis) – vertėjas, spaustuvininkas, leidėjas, Mažosios Lietuvos visuomenės veikėjas.

Biografija

Baigęs pradžios mokyklą, mokėsi privačiai pas Fridrichą Kuršaitį. Dirbo Priekulės Šrederio spaustuvėje raidžių rinkėju, 1869 m. pašauktas į karinę tarnybą, tarnavo lietuviškame dragūnų pulke Tilžėje.

Nuo 1875 m. dirbo Heinricho Holco spaustuvėje Klaipėdoje, 1879–1894 m. Holco ir Šerniaus spaustuvės dailininkas; jie spaustuvėje išspausdino 72 Mažajai Lietuvai skirtas knygas, brošiūras, lapelius.

1878–1904 m. redagavo, o iki 1894 m. ir leido „Lietuvišką ceitungą“ bei priedą ūkininkams „Laukininkų prietelis“. „Lietuviška ceitunga“ tapo tautinio atgimimo skatintoja. Nuo 1878 m. parengė ir leido naujas kalendras (lietuviškus kalendorius), kurių literatūrinėje dalyje spausdino daug grožinių kūrinių.

1898 m. pradėjo leisti liberalų laikraštį vokiečių kalba „Memeler Allgemeine Zeitung“. Palaikė ryšius su Lietuvos veikėjais, savo laikraščiuose spausdino Jono Basanavičiaus, Jono Šliūpo ir kt. raštus. Aktyviai reiškėsi visuomeniniame gyvenime, skatino ginti lietuvybę, kėlė bendradarbiavimo su Didžiąja Lietuva idėjas, rėmė „Aušros“ (1883–1886 m.) leidimą, į lietuvių kalbą išvertė virš 20 protestantų knygelių. Ilgainiui M. Šernius prarado savo santaupas, 1904 m. liga pakirto jo paskutines jėgas. 1905 m. pardavė savo namus Klaipėdoje ir persikėlė pas žmonos gimines į Cintjoniškius prie Šilutės.
