함부르크(독일어: Hamburg [ˈhambʊʁk], 저지 독일어: Hamborg, ['hambɔːx])는 독일 북부에 있는 주이며 도시이다. 독일 최대의 항구 도시이자 제2의 대도시이다. 정식 이름은 함부르크 자유 한자시(독일어: Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg; 저지 독일어: Free un Hansestadt Hamborg)이다. 알스터강, 빌레강과 엘베강이 흐른다. 북쪽으로는 슐레스비히홀슈타인주, 남쪽으로는 니더작센주와 접한다. 도시의 기원은 8세기로 거슬러 올라간다. 950년 즈음에 엘베강 유역에 함마부르크가 건립되고, 중세에는 한자 동맹(Hansa-Städtebund)의 일원이 되었다. 현재 독일 연방 정부 조직 형태상 함부르크는 지방 자치주에 해당한다. 시민은 개신교가 많고, 정치적으로는 독일 사회민주당의 세력이 강하다. 면적은 755km2.

역사

기원전과 로마 시대에 켈트 족과 색슨 족(게르만 족의 일파)이 살고 있었으며, 825년 하마부르크 성이 함부르크 지방에 건설된 뒤 번창을 시작했다. 프리드리히 바르바로사(또는 프리드리히 1세)는 독일의 왕으로 선출된 뒤 1189년 이 도시에게 무역특권과 사용료 면제, 운항 특권을 인정했다. 중세가 지나고 르네상스 까지, 스페인, 노르웨이, 포르투갈, 영국과 네덜란드와 깊은 관계를 맺었다. 르네상스 이후에도 빛나는 황금기를 맞이해, 뤼베크 다음으로 한자 동맹에서 중요한 항구 자리를 차지해, 특권을 맘껏 누렸다. 그 후 20세기에는 서독의 가장 중요한 도시 중 하나라는 명예를 얻었고, 21세기 초에도 꾸준히 증권거래소, 은행 등으로 붐비는 도시이다.

스포츠

함부르크는 때때로 '독일 스포츠의 중심지'라고 불리기도 하는데, 이 지역에서 1 분데스리가에서 가장 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 축구팀인 함부르크 SV이 있고, 지역 라이벌팀인 FC 장크트 파울리가 있다.
