포틀랜드섬의 절벽과 채석장

포틀랜드섬(The Isle of Portland)은 영국의 섬으로, 영국 해협 쪽으로 육지와 석회암으로 이어져 있다. 섬의 넓이는 2.4km, 길이는 6km이다.

영국 남부 도싯주 웨이머스 휴양지의 최남단에 붙어 있다. 인구는 13,000명 정도이며, 웨이머스와 사이에 있는 포틀랜드항은 인공적으로 만든 항구로는 세계에 가장 항구 중 하나다. 1848년부터 1905년 사이에 석회석으로 만들어진 방파제로 영국 해군이 처음으로 사용하기 시작했으며, 제1차 세계 대전과 제2차 세계 대전에서 큰 역할을 하였다. 지금은 일반항으로 바뀌어 2012년 하계 올림픽에 쓰일 계획이다.

이곳에서 아직도 채굴되고 있는 석회석인 포틀랜드석은 런던에 있는 세인트 폴 대성당과 뉴욕에 있는 국제 연합 본부의 건축 재료로 쓰였다.
