იტალიელი ფიზიკოსი და ასტრონომი ფრანჩესკო მარია გრიმალდი დაიბადა 1618 წლის 2 აპრილს ქალაქ ბოლონიაში. განათლება მშობლიურ ქალაქში მიიღო და იქვე, იეზუიტთა კოლეგიუმში, პროფესორის წოდებაც მიიღო. ასწავლიდა ფიზიკას და მათემატიკას. ფ. გრიმალდის მნიშვნელოვანი შრომაა „ფიზიკა-მათემატიკური ტრაქტატი სინათლის, ფეერისა და ცისარტყელას შესახებ“, რომელიც გამოქვეყნდა ავტორის გარდაცვალებიდან ორი წლის შემდეგ, ცნობილია სინათლის დიფრაქციის აღმოჩენით.
