デーイポボス

デーイポボス（古希: Δηΐφοβος, Dēiphobos, ラテン語: Deiphobus）は、ギリシア神話の人物である。長母音を省略してデイポボスとも表記される。

トロイアの王プリアモスとヘカベーの子で、ヘクトール、パリス、ヘレノス、パムモーン、ポリーテース、アンティポス、ヒッポノオス、ポリュドーロス、トローイロス、クレウーサ、ラーオディケー、ポリュクセネー、カッサンドラーと兄弟[1]。

デーイポボスは兄弟の中でヘクトールと最も親しく、トロイア戦争ではトロイア軍における代表的な武将の1人として戦った。後にヘレネーの夫。

神話

トロイア戦争

『イーリアス』3日目、トロイア軍がギリシア軍の防壁を攻撃したとき、デーイポボスはヘレノス、アシオスとともに第3部隊を指揮した。デーイポボスはメーリオネースの攻撃を楯で防御し、ヒュプセーノールを討った。アンキーセースの娘ヒッポダメイアの夫アルカトオスがイードメネウスに討たれたときはアイネイアースを奮起させてアルカトオスの遺体を運び出すために戦い、アスカラポスを討った。しかしアスカラポスの遺体から兜を奪い取ったとき、メーリオネースに上腕を槍で刺され、ポリーテースに運ばれて戦場を脱出した。

ヘクトールがアキレウスに追い回されたとき、アテーナーはデーイポボスの姿となってヘクトールに近づいた。そのためヘクトールは一番親しいデーイポボスが助けに来てくれたと勘違いした。アテーナーは「ともにアキレウスを討とう｣と言ってヘクトールをアキレウスと戦わせ、ヘクトールがアキレウスに槍を投げてかわされて槍を失ったときに姿を消した。

ヘクトールはデーイポボスにかわりの槍を求めたが誰もおらず、ようやく自分が神にだまされていたことに気づき、アキレウスに討たれて死んだ[2]。

ヘレノスとの対立

その後もデーイポボスは戦い続け、一説によればデーイポボスはパリスとともにアキレウスを殺したという[3]。しかしパリスが死んだとき、ヘレネーをめぐってヘレノスと争いになり、プリアモスは年長のヘレノスではなくデーイポボスをヘレネーの夫に選んだ。このためヘレノスは怒ってイーデー山に去り、後にギリシア軍に捕らえられてトロイアを陥とす方法を話した[4]。

デーイポボスの死

後にトロイア軍が木馬を戦利品として運び込んだとき、デーイポボスはヘレネーとともに木馬のそばに行った。そしてヘレネーは木馬の中にギリシア軍の戦士が隠れていないかを、彼らの妻の声を真似て呼びかけて確かめた[5][6]。

やがてトロイア人が寝静まると戦士たちが木馬の腹から出てきて戦ったが、メネラーオスとオデュッセウスはデーイポボスの館に向かい、そこで最も激しい戦闘を戦い、アテーナーの助力で勝利した[7]。デーイポボスはメネラーオスに殺されたが[8][9]、後にアイネイアースは冥界に降りたときにデーイポボスに再会し、彼がメネラーオスにどんな残酷な方法で殺されたのかを知った[10]。しかしデーイポボスを殺したのはヘレネーであったともいわれる[11]。
