遺骨

遺骨（いこつ）は、死者の骨のこと。故人に敬意を払い御遺骨、お骨とも言う。白骨化した遺体や火葬によって骨だけと化した物故者の身体を指す。一体（たい）、もしくは一柱（はしら）と数える。

焼骨・納骨

通常の日本の葬儀の場合、告別式の御遺体は火葬場において火葬され（地域や遺体の状況によっては、遺体を火葬した後に告別式を行う場合もある）、遺骨は親族などにより骨壺に収められる（骨揚げ・収骨）。骨壷に収められた遺骨は、自宅に安置（後飾り壇など）または寺院に預けられ、墓地または納骨堂があれば仏式の場合は四十九日、神式の場合は五十日祭までに墓地（納骨堂）に納める（納骨）されるのが通例であるが、火葬した当日に墓地（または納骨堂）に埋葬することもある。

墓相式の納骨では、納骨堂に赤土を敷き込み、骨壷より納骨袋に移し替え納骨するか、遺骨のまま納骨することが吉相とされている。

エホバの証人では遺骨を手元に置いておくことは偶像崇拝と見なされるため、遺骨は火葬場で処分される。

分骨

1人の故人の遺骨を2ヶ所以上の異なる場所に分けて納骨することを分骨（ぶんこつ）という。なお、場合によっては分骨ごとの埋葬許可書が必要となることもあり、また、一度納骨された遺骨を分骨する場合は関係者（遺族・墓地の管理者など）の立会いが必要となる。

分骨をする場合は、メインの骨壺から分骨用に用意された小さい骨壷に移すのが通例となっている。勿論骨揚げの際に分ける場合もある（この場合は小さい骨壺には喉仏の骨が入る事が多い）。

すでにお墓に埋葬してある遺骨の一部を分骨する場合

墓地の管理者に分骨証明書を発行してもらい、石材店に依頼して墓石から遺骨の一部（分骨する分）を取り出す。分骨先の墓地などの管理者に分骨証明書を提出し、納骨する。

火葬場で分骨する場合

葬儀社に分骨を希望する旨を伝え、分骨用の骨壷の手配、火葬場管理者に対する火葬証明書の発行手続き申請を依頼する。火葬場管理者に分骨証明書を発行してもらい、火葬場で分骨用の骨壷に分骨してもらい、分骨先の墓で納骨する。

利用法

「骨を拾う」（死者を火葬し、骨揚げすること）などの慣用句にも見られるように、遺骨は死者の形見の一つとして大切にされてきた。そのため遺骨争いが起こることもある。

遺骨を砕いて粘土に混ぜたものを核にして養殖真珠にしたり[1]、遺骨に含まれる炭素を利用してダイヤモンドにしたり[2]できる。 遺灰をペンダントトップに収めたり[1]上述の宝石をジュエリーに加工したり[2]して身に着ける人もいる。

フリスビーを改良し、フリスビー関連スポーツを普及させたエド・ヘドリックは、遺灰で記念のフリスビーを作ることを望んだ[3][4]。遺言どおり遺灰の入ったフリスビーが作製され、販売もされた[5]。
