ヤマタニシ科 Cyclophoridae[4]は、東南アジアなど温暖な地域の陸上に棲む巻貝である[5]。カタツムリとは体の構造が異なり、淡水に棲むタニシ科や、淡水性と海水性の両方を含むオニノツノガイ上科その他多数の海に棲む巻貝類と同様に、蓋つきで雌雄の別があり歯舌は紐舌型で、新生腹足類 Caenogastropodaに分類される[6][7]。カタツムリとの主な相違点を下表に示した[8]。メスはオスと交尾して卵を育て、産卵する。卵からは直接稚貝が孵化する。卵や稚貝が海流に乗って拡散する可能性は低く、同じ種でも地域による差が認められる[9]。落葉の下や葉の裏側などに生息する[10]。

なお、ヤマキサゴ科はアマオブネガイ目に属し、蓋はしずくのような形である[12][13]。

人との関係

奄美群島や沖縄諸島の縄文時代の遺跡でヤマタニシが見つかっている。徳之島の面縄(おもなわ)貝塚では農耕生活の導入にともない居住区域が上昇したことと関係があると考えられている[18]。
