1957年、マーサはシェルビー郡のバプテスト・キャンプに参加しているときにビリー・ルイス・コリンズと出逢った[2]。コリンズは、レキシントンから約13マイル (21 km) 離れたジョージタウンにあるジョージタウン・カレッジの学生だった。コリンズとマーサは学位取得を進めながらデートを重ねた[2]。マーサは1959年に家政学で理学士を取得した[5]。その年前半にケンタッキー・ダービー・フェスティバルのクイーンに選ばれ、短期間だがモデルになることも考えた[2]。マーサとコリンズは卒業すると直ぐに結婚した[2]。ビリー・コリンズがルイビル大学で歯科の学位を取得する間、マーサはルイビル市にあるセネカ高校とフェアデール高校で教師をした[6]。ルイビルに居る間にスティーブとマーラという2人の子供が生まれた[5]。
