ネズミの相談

「ネズミの相談」（ネズミのそうだん）は、寓話のひとつ。イソップ寓話とされることが多いが、古いテクストには見られない。ペリー・インデックスは614番。

英語では bell the cat というイディオムになっており、「他人が嫌がる中で進んで難局に当たる」という意味である。日本語ではこの英語の言葉を翻訳した「猫の首に鈴をつける」という成句でも知られる。

出典

この話は15世紀末にヴェネツィアで出版されたアブステミウス (Laurentius Abstemius) （イタリア語でアステーミオとも）の寓話集である『百話集』（Hecatomythium）に見られる^[2]^:224。日本の江戸時代の『伊曽保物語』には下巻第17「鼠の談合の事」としてこの話を収めるが^[2]^:222-224、アブステミウスのものよりかなり内容が詳しいため、アブステミウスが出典ではないかもしれない^[3]^:43-44。ほかに『為愚痴物語』（1662年刊）では長文の物語に、『うかればなし』（1682年頃）では笑話に直されている^[3]^:33。

17世紀イギリスのロジャー・レストレンジ（英語版）による寓話集やラ・フォンテーヌの寓話詩にはアブステミウス集から採録している^[2]^:224。

明治以降の国定教科書に繰り返し取り上げられた話の一つである^[2]^:272。

あらすじ

ネズミたちは、いつも猫のためにひどい目にあわされていた。何とかしようとネズミたちが集まって相談し、その中の一匹が、「猫が来たらすぐわかって逃げられるよう、猫の首に鈴を付けよう」と提案する。皆は名案だと喜んだが、では誰が猫に鈴を付けに行くのかという段になると、誰もその役を買って出る者はおらず、ネズミたちは猫に怯えて暮らすしかなかった。

教訓

いくら素晴らしい案でも、実行できなければ絵に描いた餅であり、無意味である。
