ツブラジイ（円椎、学名: Castanopsis cuspidata）は、ブナ科シイ属に属する常緑高木。コジイ（小椎）とも呼ばれる[5]。

名称

和名の「シイ」に当てられている漢字「椎」は、スイと読まれるものが転訛したものである[6]。また、シイの語源は、葉に飯を「敷く」「敷き」というのからきたという説もある[6]。「ツブラ」は「円ら」の意味で、果実が円いことからきた呼び名であろうと、植物学者の辻井達一 (1995) が述べている[6]。

分布

日本（関東地方南部以西から四国、九州）及び朝鮮半島南部に自生している。日本では、シイの中でも南方の地方のほうに多く分布している[7]。

形態・生態

樹皮は灰黒褐色でなめらか、普通は裂け目は出来ない[8]。葉は卵状楕円形でスジダイより質が薄く、裏面は灰褐色をしている[8]。枝も葉も、シイの仲間の中では、比較的小柄である[6]。 開花期は5月から6月。 果実はスダジイよりも短くて丸く[6]、食べることができる[8]。樹高は最大25ｍに達する。

人間との関わり

シイの果実は「椎の実」とよばれ、あく抜きしないで、そのまま香ばしく炒って食べることができる[7]。その食味は、スダジイよりもツブラジイのほうが優れていると評されている[7]。食用利用は古く、遺跡からもよく出土している[7]。

古くは単に椎（しい）とよばれ、『万葉集』にも歌われている。
