サイモン・アンソニー・フォックス・ウォード（Simon Anthony Fox Ward、1941年 10月16日 – 2012年 7月20日）^[1]は、イギリスのケント州ベックナム出身の俳優。舞台と映画の両方で活躍。1972年の映画『戦争と冒険』でウィンストン・チャーチルを演じたことで知られる。

来歴

生い立ち

ケント州ベックナム、自動車ディーラーのレオナード・フォックス・ウォードとその妻ウィニフレッド・ウォードの間に生まれた^[2]。幼い頃から俳優になりたかった彼は、13歳のときにロンドンのアレインズ・スクールに入学し、15歳でナショナル・ユース・シアターのメンバーとして舞台に出演した。その後王立演劇学校で修行を積み、1963年にノーサンプトン・レパートリーでプロの舞台デビューし、翌年6月4日、セント・マーティンズ劇場でロンドンの劇場デビューを果たした^[2]。その後数年でさまざまな英国の舞台で数多くの劇場作品に出演した。

キャリア

1966年にジョー・オートンの舞台『Loot^[2]』に出演したのをきっかけに、数々の映画やテレビに出演するようになった。彼が最初に映画に出演したのは、リンゼイ・アンダーソンの『If もしも....』 (1968年) と言われているが、同作にクレジットはなく、1969年の『フランケンシュタイン恐怖の生体実験』が実質の映画デビュー作である。それまでは主に舞台俳優として活躍していたが、1972年公開の『戦争と冒険』で若き日のウィンストン・チャーチル役に抜擢され、この作品が彼を一躍有名にした。

1973年にはリチャード・レスターの『三銃士』でバッキンガム公爵を演じ、1974年にはその続編『四銃士』に出演した。また、1973年『アドルフ・ヒトラー/最後の10日間』ではナチスドイツのホフマン大尉を演じ、1976年『スカイエース』ではイギリス陸軍航空隊のクロフォード中尉、1979年『ズールー戦争』ではウィリアム・ヴェレカー中尉など、様々な軍人役を演じた。その後の映画では、1984年『スーパーガール』、1992年ピーター・コズミンスキーの『嵐が丘』では、実娘のソフィー・ワードと共演した。

1987年、路上で何者かに襲撃され頭部に重傷を負ったが、その経緯は不明であった^[3]。彼はこの事故で頭蓋骨が損傷したため脳の手術が必要となり、それによって引き起こされた慢性血液疾患である赤血球増加症が、彼の経歴に影響を与えたと考えられている。

2010年、アラン・ベネットの戯曲『The Madness of George III』の英国公演で主役を演じ、映像作品では『THE TUDORS〜背徳の王冠〜』が、彼の役者としての最後の仕事となった。

私生活

1964年、ウォードは王立演劇学校の学生時代に出会ったアレクサンドラ・マルコムと結婚。ソフィー、クラウディア、キティの3人の娘をもうけた^[4]。

晩年、体調不良に悩まされていたウォードは、2012年7月20日、サマセット州のトーントンで死去。享年70。ロンドンのハイゲート墓地に埋葬された^[5]^[1]。 2013年7月、ロンドンのコヴェント・ガーデンにあるセント・ポール大聖堂で彼の追悼式が行われた^[6]。
